Encouraging Early Exposure to STEM through Girl Scouts Sponsorship

February 13, 2026

The Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma organization is busy preparing for the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year — the Juliette Low Leadership Society annual luncheon on Feb. 19 in Oklahoma City. Expand Energy has been a consistent luncheon sponsor since the event’s start in 2005.

This year, in addition to the luncheon sponsorship, Expand Energy is supporting STEM programming for the more than 7,500 girl and adult members across the organization’s 39 counties in central and western Oklahoma. STEM is one of the pillars of the Girl Scout experience and is incorporated into all programming through hands-on opportunities.

According to the National Girls Collaborative Project, STEM curriculum is often irrelevant and disconnected from girls’ lives and there are limited, relatable female STEM role models. While women make up roughly half of the workforce, they hold only 35% of STEM jobs — and in Oklahoma, it’s closer to 25%.

“Through our programming, and thanks to Expand Energy’s donation, we intervene at key developmental ages to introduce girls to STEM, reframe what STEM looks like in the everyday, and build confidence in STEM proficiencies,” said Stacy McNeiland, CEO of Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma.

Expand Energy Manager of Geoscience (currently serving in an Investor Relations rotational role) and Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma board member, Lehne George, is the first to recognize the importance of early exposure to STEM experience.

“I first became interested in geology as a potential career after participating in an intensive science program my freshman year of high school. That early exposure to STEM — and its emphasis on real career possibilities — had a profound impact on me,” said George. “Early experiences with STEM are pivotal, especially for girls. Without it, many may never consider future STEM-related careers, including those in our industry.”

George is a mom of three and serves as a troop leader for both of her daughters. She added that supporting Girl Scouts reflects both the company’s core values and its charitable giving focus areas.

“Girl Scouts is committed to building girls of courage, confidence and character. The organization’s high-quality STEM programs were developed to specifically address the unique challenges girls face, helping them gain self-esteem and learn skills to last a lifetime,” said George.

For employees who would like to be involved, the organization encourages volunteering and direct donations. George also reminds employees that they can buy cookies, which help fund troop activities.

Girl Scout cookie sales kicked off in January and some Expand Energy offices are hosting Girl Scout entrepreneurs to further bolster sales.
