Expanding Opportunity: EXE’s Partnership with Lackawanna College’s School of Petroleum & Natural Gas

May 19, 2026

Expand Energy’s commitment to building strong local workforces runs deeper than recruitment. In NE App, that commitment comes to life through our long‑standing partnership with Lackawanna College’s School of Petroleum and Natural Gas (PNG) — one of Pennsylvania’s most important training grounds for the next generation of oil and gas professionals.

For years, Expand Energy has supported the school through financial contributions, hands‑on learning opportunities and direct engagement with students. We participate in the college’s summer intern program, donate out‑of‑service equipment so students can train on real tools they’ll encounter in the field and serve as a top sponsor for the school’s annual sporting clay tournament, which directly funds PNG programs. We also sponsor the reception area of PNG’s new building.

But our partnership goes far beyond financial support. Today, 10 former Lackawanna students work at Expand Energy, and four of our employees serve as instructors at the school. This creates a powerful loop: students learn from professionals who are actively working in the field, and our teams gain early insight into emerging talent.

Why Lackawanna Matters
For Production Superintendent Nick Krut, the connection is personal. A Lackawanna graduate himself, Nick has watched the program evolve from its early days into a highly specialized, industry‑aligned curriculum.

“In our area, it’s the only school offering true trade school‑level training for our industry,” Krut said. “Students can earn a two‑year degree, step directly into a strong‑paying job and start building a career with minimal debt. Trades are going to be more important than ever — especially in the energy sector — and Lackawanna is creating real opportunity.”

Nick’s own path reflects that opportunity. After initially pursuing a different field, he returned to Lackawanna to transition into oil and gas.

“It was the best decision I ever made,” he said.

From the Classroom to the Field
For Production Foreman Jeff Wright, who leads Expand Energy’s summer intern program and teaches at the school, the value is equally clear.

“Four of us from Expand Energy teach at Lackawanna, which means students get the very latest on what’s happening in the field — updates on technology, AI, innovation and regulations,” Wright said. “Because we’re in the field every day, we can adapt instruction to real‑world conditions, which I think is a win for the students. And from our perspective, we get to know the students and who might be a great fit at the company.”

Wright, who grew up in the region and began his career in carpentry before transitioning into oil and gas, says teaching at PNG feels like a natural extension of his work.

He added, “I’ve always loved working with interns and new hires. Teaching gives me a chance to help students understand the industry and see their potential.”

Jeremy Yadlosky, Program Director for PNG echoed Wright, “Through the generosity of Expand Energy employees who volunteer their time and expertise in the classroom, our curriculum continues to evolve alongside industry advancements. Their willingness to mentor, teach and share real-world experience gives students access to the most current knowledge and helps prepare them for meaningful careers after graduation.”

Nearly 93% of PNG graduates are hired by major E&P, midstream and pipeline companies. Most stay local after graduation, strengthening the regional workforce and supporting the broader economy.

A Pipeline That Works
The results speak for themselves. This summer, Expand Energy will welcome four PNG lease operator interns from Lackawanna, along with two engineering interns from Texas A&M and the University of Oklahoma respectively. Among those mentoring our interns will be Lease Operator Jacob Walter, a recent new hire and a Lackawanna graduate.

“As our program continues to grow, we are incredibly grateful for the commitment and encouragement of our industry partners,” said Yadlosky. “Their continued investment in our students creates opportunities that might not otherwise be possible and helps us deliver the highest level of training available. Together, we are building a stronger future for our students and expanding learning opportunities across every sector of the industry.”
