Get to Know Chris Flanagan, Area Manager – Southwest Appalachia

Chris is a West Virginia native with strong ties to the state. Every day he works with the goal of bringing about real, positive change by producing lower cost, lower carbon energy and increasing energy accessibility and energy independence.
What is your connection to this area?
I was born in Elkins, WV and graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in petroleum and natural gas engineering. I have lived in several states in and near Southwest Appalachia, and in June 2025 I’ll be celebrating my 20-year anniversary of working in the region in oil and gas. This area is special to me and my family for many reasons. West Virginians are community-oriented. We look out for each other and have a great appreciation for the Appalachian Mountains and the beautiful landscapes, parks, trails, rivers and recreation areas in our community.
What does an average day look like for you?
Every day looks a bit different for me. I am responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations, ensuring safety standards, managing teams and driving efficiencies and productivity. I work alongside my direct reports who help manage planning, production, community affairs, engineering operations, facilities and all other area operations. I’m really lucky to be surrounded by an excellent team of self-starters and ‘doers’ that truly care about each other’s well-being.
What does success look like for your team?
Success is having a shared commitment to bringing out the best in one another and demonstrating care and concern for each other and prioritizing the well-being of every team member. By leading with integrity and trust, empowering others to be heard, providing value, having a sense of purpose and always striving for excellence, we’re aiming to be the operator of choice — recognized as the safest and most efficient operator in the basin and the industry.
What do you do when you’re not at work?
I love spending time with my wife Ashley and our three kids. When we’re not attending our kids’ sporting events, we enjoy attending WVU collegiate games. I love collecting sports cards with my son, going to concerts with my wife, playing board games and cards with my daughters and going on beach vacations with the whole family.
In the Community
During the past quarter, Expand Energy’s SW App employees have volunteered their time and resources to give back to our operating areas and participated in a number of community events. Our highlights include:
- Sponsoring STEM innovation: We proudly sponsored the 2025 Gateway to the West robotics tournament to help further community and youth education. The event welcomed over 1,000 attendees, with 80 high school teams and 69 middle school teams competing from 16 states and multiple Canadian provinces, showcasing talent, teamwork, and technological creativity.
- Supporting the next generation of women leaders: Expand was a proud sponsor of the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce’s Women’s Leadership Summit. This conference brought together women from diverse backgrounds — including students, professionals, and community leaders — to explore topics like leadership, financial wellness and community empowerment.
- Advocating for energy leadership: We proudly joined fellow GO-WV members at Oil and Gas Day at the Capitol in West Virginia, highlighting the industry’s vital role in the state’s economy. Our team hosted a company booth and participated in the Energy Roundtable, where industry leaders discussed critical issues facing West Virginia’s energy sector. This event reinforced our commitment to educating state leaders and supporting the future of energy in the region.

Sustainability Feature
