From guiding operations through one of the nation’s most heavily regulated industries to spending his free time building things by hand in the woodshop, Steve thrives in roles that call for sharp problem-solving and a steady hand.
What initially drew you to the industry and what about Expand Energy has kept you interested?
I was drawn to the industry by the challenge. Supporting oil and gas operations in a strict, highly regulated setting requires both technical knowledge and practical problem-solving, and I’ve always been motivated by demanding environments where expectations are high and the margin for error is small.
What’s kept me here is the chance to work at that intersection every day, helping operations succeed while maintaining strong environmental compliance and stewardship. The scale of the asset, the evolving regulatory landscape and the caliber of the people make this a place where the work is meaningful and continually exciting in the right ways.
Can you describe a project or moment at EXE that made you feel especially proud of your work?
One project that stands out was helping shape environmental and regulatory programs following the Expand Energy merger. Bringing together different systems, reporting structures and legacy processes is complex. Ensuring continuity of compliance while improving efficiency required strong coordination across multiple teams. Seeing that integration come together without significant disruption and with measurable improvements was something I’m especially proud of. It reinforced the power of teamwork that is rooted in experience, preparation and clear communication.
What’s something people might be surprised or interested to learn about your job or your team?
People are often surprised at how proactive the environmental team needs to be. Our work isn’t just about responding to issues or meeting regulatory requirements, it’s about anticipating risk and building systems that prevent problems before they occur.
There’s also a significant amount of data analysis and strategic planning behind the scenes. From waste tracking and spill prevention to agency reporting and audits, much of our success comes from building strong internal processes that others may never see.
What advice would you give to someone just starting at Expand Energy?
Take time to understand how the business really operates — especially in the field. The best decisions are made when you understand the operational realities behind them. This is especially true for environmental support, where ideal and effective are typically two different solutions.
Also, build relationships early. Expand Energy is full of knowledgeable people who are willing to help. Asking questions and learning from others will accelerate your growth far more than trying to figure everything out on your own.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I love spending time with my family. We encourage our kids to try a wide range of activities, and I really enjoy supporting them and being involved in whatever they’re pursuing. I never realized how busy a 5-, 8- and 10-year-old could be!
I also like working on projects around the house and spending time in my woodshop. There’s something rewarding about building or fixing things with your hands. For me, it’s a great way to reset and recharge outside of the office.
