Get to Know Jonathan Wheelis, Area Manager – Haynesville

Jonathan Wheelis

Jonathan is Louisiana-born and bred. He is second generation oil and natural gas and has spent the last 15 years of his career in the Haynesville. He’s a proud husband and father first, who also likes to golf and cheer on the LSU Tigers. Johnathan was honored at the end of the year at the 2024 Young Professional of the Year at the Greater Shreveport Chamber’s annual 40 Under Forty Awards and Gala.

What is your connection to the Haynesville? How long have you lived and worked here?
This area is home to me. I grew up in Ruston, LA and am still living there to this day. My family is from the area, and my dad cut his teeth in the oil and gas industry as a roustabout in East Texas.

I was very fortunate to grow up on ~80 acres of land. I treat the areas where we operate like they were my own property, because it’s my home and my community. This land provides a livelihood for my neighbors, my family and all of us at Expand Energy.

What does an average day look like for you?
This is a tough one to answer because my day looks different each and every day! One day I’ll be collaborating with technical teams on a well issue and the next I might be presenting to local, state or federal leaders to discuss issues that are relevant to our day-to-day operations. To say it simply, I am the leader in the Haynesville who is responsible for clearing a path to allow individuals and teams in our area to safely extract, produce and deliver natural gas to market every day.

Which of Expand Energy’s core values resonate with you most and why?
The two core values that stick out to me are Stewardship and Disrupt. Both values are tied closely together in my mind. Stewardship is essentially our license to operate as Expand Energy. Disrupt means we must challenge the status quo to achieve better outcomes for energy consumers by innovating and driving down our overall operational expenditures. At the same time, we must also help ensure that we send everyone home safe every day and not cause harm to the areas where we operate. I’m excited by the prospect of challenging the status quo to drive better outcomes and push the company forward.

What do you do when you’re not at work?
When I am not at work, I love to watch my kids play whatever sport they are into, fish in our pond, or chase a golf ball around the course. My family also loves the beach, so we make a trip down to the ocean every year!

In the Community

During the past quarter, Expand Energy’s Haynesville employees have volunteered their time and resources to give back to our operating areas and participated in a number of community events. Our highlights include:

  • Empowering students for education and career success: Haynesville employees supported the Junior Achievement Work Readiness Initiative – Student & Mentor Lunch, where 300 high school students from Caddo, Bossier, and Webster Parishes connected with 150 business mentors in roundtable discussions. The event emphasized the importance of setting educational goals to create future job opportunities, inspiring students to take charge of their career paths.
  • Hands-on learning opportunities for future professionals: We hosted Bossier Parish Community College students with an interest in the oil and gas field for an immersive pad site tour and educational experience. Throughout the day, students explored two operational sites, engaged in discussions and gained firsthand insight into day-to-day engineering practices, helping bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world experience.
  • Volunteering with the Food Bank of Louisiana: Haynesville team members volunteered with the Food Bank of Louisiana to pack, organize and load meals to be delivered to members of our community in need.
